A few tips and tricks to help you get through the messy step of applying your makeup that is mascara

  • Different mascara brushes have different uses
  1. Comb wands are usually flat and small and have have evenly-spaced little teeth.  These teeth are designed to define and separate the eyelashes.  These are great for improving length, but they do not add a lot of volume.
  2. Straight wands can be tilted and used at  angle to get coverage over every singlelash, even very small ones or those located in the corner of your eyes. Straight wands benefit those with large eyes or lots of eyelashes.
  3. Curved wands will give you an extra curl/lift
  4. Tapered wands, sometimes known as ‘heart-shaped brushes’, are basically the same as straight wands except they taper off to a point at the tip. You can get nice volume and length from the thicker part of the brush, but you can also use the tip to pick out individual lashes for extra definition – or to coat the little lashes on the inner corner of your eye.
  5. Spherical wands work the same way as a regular mascara wands – only a lot smaller. Like a comb wand, spherical wands are great for separating and defining each lash, except you have to work in smaller sections. The smaller size means you can be accurate and pick out each individual lash, but the shape means you might transfer product onto your eyelids more often, especially if you have hooded lids.

  • Apply your mascara in 2-3 coats. Apply the first coat, let it dry for about 5 minutes and then go over the lashes again with another coat.
  • Clean up messes you make with a q-tip (cotton bud)
  • When you remove the wand from the bottle make sure to scrap off any excess mascara from the wand. This will help you avoid making your lashes clumpy.
  • Wiggle the wand left to right at the base of lashes. It’s the mascara placed near the roots — not the tips — that gives the illusion of length.Pull the wand up and through lashes, wiggling as you go. The wiggling part is key because it separates lashes.
  • Don’t pump the wand in and out of the bottle. This pushes air into the tube which will make the mascara dry out faster causing clumping and flaking. Instead, gently twist the back and forth or in circular motions to pick up the desired amount of product.
  • A trick makeup artists use to make lashes pop is apply one coat of lengthening mascara, followed by one coat of thickening mascara.
  • Add some colour without actually using any eyeshadow or eyeliner – use blue mascara!!

  • If you don’t trust your self with the mess, use a business card (or any other square card) to apply the mascara
